We've made significant progress throughout the first year of the scorecard and it is a key responsibility of our suppliers to input new products and update packaging changes on an ongoing basis."4

Wal-Mart unveiled the Packaging Scorecard on November 01, 2006, at its Sustainability Packaging exposition. The Scorecard was introduced to achieve the company's aim of reducing packaging by 5 percent by 2013. For the first three months, the Scorecard was made available to more than 2,000 private label suppliers of Wal-Mart on an experimental basis. In the Packaging Scorecard system, suppliers were required to enter information regarding packaging of each product into a web-based system.

Each product packaging was then judged in terms of different metrics of sustainability that included Green House Gas (GHG) emissions produced per ton of packaging, size of packaging, use of raw materials, use of renewable energy, recycled content, transportation impacts, innovation, etc. Wal-Mart followed the "7 Rs of Packaging" - remove, reduce, reuse, renew, recycle, revenue, and read - to decide on the metrics. From February 01, 2007, the Packaging Scorecard was available to all the suppliers of Wal-Mart in the US...
